Handcrafted Antique French Oak Leather Meets Timeless Rolex Design
Antique French Oak bund strap for Rolex Sub – At Dangerous9straps, every custom watch strap begins with a conversation. Each project is designed around the customer’s watch, their personal style, and the story they want their timepiece to tell. Recently, I had the pleasure of creating a very special bespoke Bund strap for my longtime customer, Dale, from the United States, to accompany his recently acquired vintage Rolex Red Submariner.
Before sending the finished strap across the Atlantic, I couldn’t resist fitting it to one of my own watches—a modern Rolex Submariner Ref. 114060—to capture a few photographs and showcase the design. While the modern Submariner differs from Dale’s vintage Red Sub, the photos beautifully demonstrate the character, craftsmanship, and integrated appearance that this custom strap brings to the iconic Rolex design.
Hand-Dyed Antique French Oak Leather
This Bund strap begins with premium natural vegetable-tanned leather in its original cream color. Rather than using pre-dyed leather, every strap is individually hand-stained and dyed to achieve the exact finish requested by the customer.
For Dale’s project, the chosen color was Antique French Oak, a rich vintage-inspired tone developed through a carefully controlled multi-stage dyeing and finishing process. Each layer is applied by hand, allowing the leather to develop remarkable depth, subtle variations, and a patina that simply cannot be replicated by factory production methods.
The result is a completely unique strap, ensuring that no two Dangerous9straps creations are ever exactly alike.
Traditional Handcraftsmanship
Once the leather has reached its final finish, every component of the strap is assembled entirely by hand. The strap is hand saddle stitched using the customer’s choice of premium linen thread, a traditional technique renowned for both its exceptional durability and beautiful appearance.
Unlike machine stitching, hand saddle stitching creates an incredibly strong seam that complements the handcrafted nature of every Dangerous9straps creation while adding distinctive character that only genuine handwork can provide.
Featuring the Exclusive TCLS Upgrade
One of the defining features of this Bund strap is my exclusive Thick Curved Lug System (TCLS) upgrade.
This design incorporates carefully sculpted padding at the lugs, allowing the strap to follow the natural curves of the Rolex case and create a far more integrated appearance than a conventional straight strap. Combined with the fully lined Bund underlay, the result is a seamless transition between watch and leather.
The goal is simple: to make the watch and strap appear as though they were designed together from the very beginning.
Designed for Vintage Rolex Enthusiasts
Bund straps have long been associated with military history and vintage tool watches, making them a natural companion for classic Rolex sports models. When thoughtfully designed and carefully proportioned, they add both visual presence and wearing comfort while enhancing the individuality of the watch.
My vision for Dale’s strap was to create something that didn’t merely support his vintage Rolex Red Submariner, but became part of its identity. The finished combination gives the impression that the watch has literally grown out of the leather—or perhaps that the leather was crafted around the watch itself.
Judging by these photographs on the Rolex Submariner Ref. 114060, I think that vision has been beautifully realized. I can’t wait to see the strap paired with Dale’s remarkable vintage Red Submariner, where I’m confident it will feel completely at home.
