Black Nubuck Alligator Strap for IWC Portugieser IW3714 – When it comes to timeless chronographs, the IWC Portugieser Chronograph IW3714-04 stands out as one of the most elegant and enduring designs in modern watchmaking. This week at Dangerous9straps, I’m proud to feature a strap I recently completed for my great local customer, Sören. It’s the third strap I’ve built for him, and perhaps my favorite yet—a bespoke Black Nubuck Alligator strap designed to complement his vintage Portugieser perfectly.

Why the IWC Portugieser Chronograph IW3714 Deserves a Custom Strap
The IW3714-04 has achieved iconic status thanks to its clean dial layout, elegant feuille hands, and balanced proportions. Its versatility allows it to shine both as a dress watch and as a casual daily wearer. A watch this refined deserves a strap that not only enhances its beauty but also offers the wearer something tactile and personal.
That’s exactly what we achieved with this custom Black Nubuck Alligator strap.
Black Nubuck Alligator: A Modern Twist on a Classic Strap
Unlike glossy or matte alligator hides, Nubuck Alligator has a sueded finish that offers a wonderfully tactile feel. This texture softens the formal aesthetic of the Portugieser, while still maintaining a level of refinement worthy of such a celebrated timepiece. The combination of the watch’s silver dial and the strap’s velvety black surface creates a pairing that feels both sophisticated and unique.
Integrated Fit with our Thick Curved Lug System (TCLS)
To ensure the strap sits perfectly on the wrist, I built it with padding at the lugs and our signature Thick Curved Lug System (TCLS). This system provides a truly integrated fit between the lugs, echoing the look of an OEM strap while offering the superior craftsmanship of a custom, hand-made piece. The TCLS not only enhances the visual flow but also ensures a snug, comfortable fit.
Kangaroo Leather Lining and Hand-Stitched Details
Inside, the strap is lined with a custom light grey-dyed ‘Clone’ patterned Kangaroo gloving leather. Kangaroo leather is exceptionally strong yet supple, making it ideal for comfort and durability. The lining is paired with superfine hand saddle-stitching in Slate Grey linen thread, chosen to subtly complement the dial details without distracting from the overall design.
Finishing Touch: IWC-Style Deployant Clasp
To complete the OEM-inspired look, the strap is paired with an IWC-style aftermarket deployant clasp. Not only does this provide the refined appearance of IWC’s original hardware, but it also improves comfort and extends the lifespan of the strap by minimizing stress on the leather.
A Perfect Combination: Watch of the Week
The end result is a strap and watch pairing that feels luxurious, refined, and entirely bespoke. Sören’s IWC Portugieser Chronograph IW3714 on Black Nubuck Alligator is a perfect example of how the right strap can elevate an already iconic timepiece.
