A Brief History of the Rolex Explorer II
The Rolex Explorer II was first introduced in 1971 as a purpose-built watch for cave explorers, mountaineers, and adventurers operating in extreme environments. Its defining feature—the fixed 24-hour bezel paired with an additional GMT hand—allowed wearers to distinguish between day and night in conditions where natural light was absent.
Over the decades, the Explorer II evolved into a robust, highly legible sports watch, maintaining its tool-watch DNA while refining proportions and performance. The modern Ref. 226570 continues this legacy with improved movement technology, enhanced lume, and the unmistakable Polar dial that has become a favorite among collectors.

Anthony’s newly arrived strap is crafted from our exclusive Vintage Dakar Teju Lizard leather—a rare oil-tanned pull-up exotic that stands apart from traditional lizard finishes. Unlike glossy or overly refined exotic leathers, this tannage delivers a uniquely rugged aesthetic, with subtle tonal variation that develops character over time.
This is not your typical “dress exotic.” It’s built for wear, aging beautifully alongside the watch.
Fully Integrated Fit (FIF): Form Meets Function
A defining feature of this build is our Fully Integrated Fit (FIF). The strap is padded at the lugs and precisely notched to the full width, creating a seamless, integrated look between the case and strap. From there, it tapers back elegantly to accommodate the wearer’s preferred clasp or buckle.
The result is a strap that feels purpose-built for the Explorer II—enhancing its presence on the wrist while maintaining balance and comfort.
Thoughtful Details: Stitching, Edge Paint, and Lining
Anthony opted for superfine hand saddle stitching using white French linen thread, perfectly echoing the clean Polar dial. This subtle detail ties the entire aesthetic together without overpowering the watch.
To bring out the Explorer II’s signature GMT hand, we added contrast orange edge paint, paired with an orange Nappa kangaroo leather lining. This combination delivers both visual impact and performance—kangaroo leather is renowned for its exceptional strength, flexibility, and long-term comfort on the wrist.
Inner-Fold Deployant Clasp: Comfort Refined
The strap is finished with our inner-fold deployant clasp, offering a streamlined appearance while maximizing comfort. This configuration reduces wear on the leather, ensures a consistent fit, and creates a clean, uninterrupted look when worn.
