When AI Meets Bespoke Strapmaking

An AI-Inspired Rolex GMT-Master II Strap – Every now and then, a custom strap comes along that pushes me to approach my craft a little differently. This bespoke Rolex GMT-Master II strap for my good customer Soren is certainly one of those projects—and it is one of the most unique and challenging straps I have made in quite some time.

The starting point was particularly interesting. Soren had used AI to develop a visual concept for a strap for his Rolex GMT-Master II “Batgirl”, and the resulting design immediately caught my attention. The combination of strong color blocking, contrasting stitching, and the unusual central design created something that was both sporty and highly distinctive.

Of course, turning an AI concept into a functional, wearable luxury watch strap is another matter entirely!

A Striking Two-Tone Alcantara Design

The finished strap is made from black and Signal Blue Alcantara, a luxurious sueded fabric with a wonderfully soft texture and a contemporary technical character. Rather than simply dividing the strap into two colors, the design uses a split two-tone construction, creating a strong visual line directly down the center of the strap.

That central division is emphasized by perhaps the most distinctive feature of the entire design: a prominent series of “X” stitches running down the center of the strap. These are executed in Slate Grey French-milled linen, creating just enough contrast against both the black and Signal Blue Alcantara without overwhelming the design.

I particularly like the way the central stitching draws the eye toward the middle of the strap. Combined with the blue-and-black split, it gives the strap an almost architectural appearance that works exceptionally well with the technical character of the Rolex GMT-Master II.

TCLS Creates the Integrated Fit

You might have noticed one important change from Soren’s original AI prototype was the addition of our Thick Curved Lug System (TCLS).

The AI design provided the visual inspiration, but it did not incorporate TCLS. Soren specifically wanted the finished strap to have a more integrated appearance between the lugs, so I incorporated our TCLS construction along with substantial padding at the lugs.

TCLS allows the strap to follow the curved transition between the watch case and strap, creating a much more integrated fit while retaining the flexibility necessary for comfortable wear. It is a perfect example of where the physical realities of bespoke strapmaking need to complement an exciting design concept.

Silver Nappa Kangaroo leather lining:

This strap was finished off with our supremely durable Silver Metallic Nappa Kangaroo lining which matches both the Silver tone of the watch case and also the bezel numbers and ‘X’ pattern stitching down the center of the strap.  These kind of attention to the details are critical to creating a unified ‘whole of watch’ design that Dangerous9straps has become famed for.

Every Detail Is Deliberately Matched

Even the perimeter stitching follows the two-tone theme. The black side uses black stitching, while the Signal Blue side uses matching blue stitching. The edge paint follows the same principle, reinforcing the separation between the two colors.

This attention to detail keeps the strap visually cohesive while allowing the Slate Grey center “X” stitching to remain the undisputed focal point.

The finished strap is paired with a TAG Heuer-style clip deployant clasp, which is particularly well suited to this design. Because this style of clasp does not require traditional adjustment holes, it provides infinite adjustability, allowing Soren to achieve a precise and comfortable fit.
