The Tale of Two Glashütte Original watches
The Tale of Two Glashütte Original watches – Hi strap lovers, I’ve had the pleasure of building straps for two different versions of this beautiful Glashütte Original Karree watches in the past year and so thought that it could be fun to feature photos of these two watch/strap combinations. I will feature them in the order in which they were made:
Dimitris’ Glashütte Original Karree Moon Phase/Power Reserve Manual in Steel:
The first up is Dimitris’ Glashütte Original Karree Moon Phase/Power Reserve Manual in Steel – For this watch, I made a strap from a beautiful Antique Chestnut Alligator with a more Orange Tone to fit the original GO deployant clasp. This strap features padding at the lugs, double keeper loops (1 floating and 1 fixed), together with our SuperExotica Upgrade with Emergency Orange SuperMatte Teju Lizard lining, and superfine hand saddle stitching with matching French-milled linen thread.
As I had said when designing this strap in collaboration with my customer, I love these art deco styled watches, and what makes this Glashütte Karree even more special is that Glashütte has gone to the trouble and expense of designing the watch movement to fit within the shape of the watch instead of just dropping a round movement in a Tonneau shaped case. To my mind, this represents watchmaking at its old school best. And a gorgeous movement it is, so BRAVO to Glashütte
I think that this strap turned out to be a great match for Dimitris’ Glashütte and think that the Emergency Orange SuperMatte Teju Lizard lining while not only being extremely durable, also adds a great pop of fun and color to this otherwise serious bit of horological kit!
Detlev’s Glashütte Original Karree Chronograph in Rose Gold:
The second strap that I completed for my customer Detlev’s Glashütte Karree Senator Chronograph in Rose Gold. When my good custom Detlev arrived at the workshop to design his strap I was really taken by the great big Art Deco brick of a watch! The level of detail, that had been invested in the watch case, stunningly dial, and movement really knocked me out.
My customer started out by saying that he really wanted to go as subtle and classy as possible with the strap, as he really wanted the watch itself to be the center of attention and for the strap to be just the beautiful framing. With this design criterion in mind, we soon settled on our very subdued, but classic Racing Black Alligator. Featuring padding at the lugs, to give the strap enough bulk to fit the massive Rose Gold case and lugs, hand saddle stitched with black French-milled linen thread and uncomplicatedly lined with our standard light tan standard kidskin leather. The results, I think speak for themselves as being the model or subtlety and a perfect framing for this massive and yet against all expectations elegant timepiece.
