The Return of Our Swiss Army Canvas Strap
A Dangerous9straps Classic Returns for an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore
The Return of Our Swiss Army Canvas Strap – Every now and then, a project comes through the workshop that reminds me why I fell in love with a particular strap design in the first place.
Recently, I had the pleasure of completing one of our signature Swiss Army Rucksack Canvas and Leather straps for a customer’s extraordinary Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph T3 Terminator Titanium Grey Dial Limited Edition. It’s a watch with tremendous presence and unmistakable character—one that deserves a strap with an equally compelling story.
Although I don’t yet have photographs that I can share of the completed strap fitted to the watch, the experience of building it after a hiatus of several years rekindled my appreciation for what has become one of the true classics in the Dangerous9straps collection.
A Design Born from Collaboration
The origins of this strap date back to 2012 when I collaborated with my good friend and long-time customer, Gabe Alvarez from sunny Southern California.

Gabe owned a Panerai PAM00312 and wanted something completely different from the usual leather or rubber options. Together we developed a design using authentic 1950s vintage Swiss Army rucksack canvas combined with premium leather. From the moment the first strap was completed, I knew we had created something special.
More than thirteen years later, that original concept remains exclusive to Dangerous9straps and continues to attract collectors looking for something genuinely unique.
Authentic Vintage Materials with Military Heritage
The heart of this design is genuine 1950s Swiss Army rucksack canvas, salvaged from military backpacks that have already lived a remarkable life.
The canvas carries decades of natural ageing, subtle colour variation and authentic patina that simply cannot be replicated by newly manufactured fabrics. Every section tells its own story, ensuring that no two straps are ever identical.
Combined with carefully selected premium leather, each bespoke strap offers the perfect balance between rugged military history and refined hand craftsmanship.
One of Our Most Technically Challenging Straps
While these straps appear deceptively simple, they are among the most technically demanding designs that I build.

Each strap is constructed from four individual layers:
- A premium vintage leather trim layer.
- Authentic Swiss Army rucksack canvas.
- A natural vegetable-tanned leather core that provides strength, stability and body.
- A premium vintage leather lining for lasting comfort against the wrist.
Every strap is then meticulously hand saddle stitched using fine linen thread, creating a level of durability that machine stitching simply cannot match.
Even seemingly small details require considerable time. The floating keeper alone can take nearly an hour to cut, shape, assemble and stitch by hand—a level of craftsmanship that has become synonymous with Dangerous9straps.

These are precisely the kinds of details that most people never notice consciously, but they immediately appreciate when holding the finished strap.
Built for Watches with Presence
Since Gabe’s original Panerai commission, this design has found homes on an impressive range of watches.
Over the years I have handcrafted variations for Panerai, Audemars Piguet Royal Oak models, Kaventsmann dive watches, Bell & Ross BR01 and BR03 collections, Breitling chronographs and numerous other oversized sports watches.

Each commission is individually tailored to complement the watch, ensuring the proportions, leather selection and finishing perfectly suit both the timepiece and its owner.

The recently completed Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore T3 Terminator was no exception. Its bold titanium case and unmistakable design called for a strap that could match its strength without overwhelming the watch itself.
Time to Build Another Classic
Completing this latest commission reminded me just how much I enjoy making these straps.
They’re labor intensive, technically demanding and impossible to rush—but that’s exactly what makes them so rewarding.
If you own a Panerai, Audemars Piguet, Bell & Ross, Breitling, Kaventsmann or another substantial sports watch, and you’re looking for something that no one else will have, I’d love to build one for you.
Perhaps this recent Royal Oak Offshore project marks the return of one of Dangerous9straps’ most iconic creations.
I certainly hope it won’t be another several years before the next one arrives on my workbench.
