New Arrivals: Exotic Leathers from Italy – At Dangerous9straps, we’re always on the lookout for unique and extraordinary materials to bring your custom watch strap visions to life. One of the perks of being based in Southern Germany is our close proximity to Northern Italy—home to some of the finest exotic leather suppliers in the world. Since Italy also happens to be one of our favorite holiday destinations, we often combine business with pleasure by paying visits to our suppliers on our return journeys.
This month, during the Pfingsten (Pentecost) holiday, we took a few days to relax on the enchanting Isola d’Elba. I’m happy to report that the island remains every bit as idyllic as ever. On our way back home, we made a planned stop in Milan to visit one of our trusted exotic skin suppliers—and came away with a truly remarkable selection of new materials that we’re excited to offer for your next custom strap project.
Washed Grey-Blue Alligator:
Photos truly don’t do these hides justice. This exquisite matte-finish alligator leather features an elegant blend of white, grey, and blue tones. It’s beautifully subtle and sophisticated. As the strap is worn over time, the surface can be waxed and burnished, deepening the tones and developing a rich, personalized patina. A truly dynamic material that evolves with wear.
Washed Earth & Blue Alligator:
Sharing the same tannage style as the Grey-Blue variant, this version adds warm earth tones into the mix—creating a remarkable tri-tone palette of tan, grey, and blue. The effect is breathtaking in person. These hides are rare, and the straps made from them will be one-of-a-kind statement pieces.
Waxed Saffron Alligator:
This hide immediately caught our eye with its bold, rust-orange coloration and dramatic waxed pull-up finish. It’s a small hide, which means only a few straps will be made from it—but each one will be unforgettable. The finish creates natural tonal shifts when the leather is flexed or bent, adding incredible depth and character.
British Tan Alligator:
A rich curry-toned alligator hide with a flawless matte finish and beautifully even texture. This one-of-a-kind hide will produce stunning straps with timeless appeal, ideal for both dress and casual watch styles.
Charcoal Nile Crocodile
This deep, glossy charcoal Nile Crocodile hide is another rare gem. A fantastic alternative to standard black, its dark richness offers just a hint of depth and warmth, making it an ideal pairing for watches in silver, gunmetal, or even bronze cases.
Vintage Mustang Alligator:
This is a particularly intriguing hide—a fusion of nubuck texture and waxed scale centers, resulting in a rustic yet refined color mix of tan and red-brown. It offers a vintage, weathered aesthetic that’s both rugged and elegant, perfect for collectors seeking something truly distinctive.
Navy Blue Ostrich Leg
While we weren’t initially on the hunt for ostrich leg leather, this semi-matte navy blue version was simply too perfect to pass up. The color is a deep, pure navy—mercifully free of the red undertones that often compromise blue hues. It’s elegant, understated, and incredibly versatile.
Ostrich Crown Quill – Army Green, Tabac, and Flame Red
On a whim, we asked our supplier if they had any smaller Ostrich Crown Quill hides suitable for watch straps, and they delivered in style. These beauties—available in Army Green, Tabac (a rich safari brown), and Flame Red—are ideal for our work, as the quill pattern is more tightly spaced, which is essential on smaller items like straps (as opposed to shoes or handbags where larger quill spacing works better).
Army Green: A perfect match for military-inspired watches—think the Breitling Aviator 8 Curtiss Warhawk or Panerai’s PAM735, PAM736, PAM737, PAM760, and the iconic Bronzo.
Military Green Ostrich Crown Quill Tabac: A neutral, earthy tone that pairs effortlessly with nearly any timepiece. It would look especially sharp on a white or cream dial—imagine it on a Rolex Polar Explorer or the Audemars Piguet Safari.
Tabac Ostrich Crown Quill Enzo Red: A bold, vibrant hue ideal for sports watches featuring red accents or design elements. It’s energetic, eye-catching, and unapologetically stylish
Polished Black High-Contrast Stingray
Last but far from least, we managed to acquire the final two high-quality Black Polished Stingray hides with dramatic center pearl sections that our supplier had in stock. These skins feature bold, high-contrast black and white coloring, and the large central pearl clusters will make for extraordinary strap centerpieces. Stingray is famously durable and visually striking, making it a fantastic choice for both function and flair.
